According to the Finnish Navy, they cannot send their minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz

The Finnish Navy has stated it is unable to assist in keeping the Strait of Hormuz mine-free due to the specific design limitations of their minesweepers.

The Finnish Navy has responded to a request from US President Donald Trump about contributing to the security of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that their minesweepers are not designed for operations outside the Baltic Sea. Annele Apajakari, the Navy's information director, emphasized that the Katanpää-class minesweepers were built to meet Finland's unique environmental and operational conditions, especially during a period when Finland was not a NATO member. The fleet includes three Katanpää-class ships, but their operational range is restricted to the Baltic Sea.

The Katanpää-class vessels were developed with Finland's national defense in mind and lack the adaptability needed for deployment in international waters like the Strait of Hormuz. Since these ships were constructed between 2012 and 2016, there were no initial considerations for them potentially being requested for different international engagements. Apajakari mentioned that Finland had previously operated a minesweeper named Pohjanmaa, which was suitable for larger operations abroad, but that ship is no longer in service, limiting Finland's capabilities to contribute to multinational security efforts.

This situation reflects not only the constraints of Finland's naval assets but also the broader implications for European countries in contributing to international military operations. As security in sensitive areas like the Strait of Hormuz becomes increasingly critical, the limitations of national fleets underscore the importance of alliances and the need for collaborative defense strategies. Finland's position highlights the challenges smaller nations face in meeting international defense obligations without significant investment in naval capabilities.
