New finding at the wreck of 'Mentor': Marble fragment from the Elgin cargo

Recent underwater excavations at the historic shipwreck of the Mentor have uncovered a marble fragment believed to be part of the Elgin collection.

The systematic underwater archaeological research at the historic shipwreck of the Mentor continued in 2025, supervised by Dr. Dimitrios Kourkoumelis-Rodostamou, Deputy Head of the Department of Underwater Antiquities in Greece. The Mentor was a briki that sank in September 1802, just outside the port of Avlemonas, southeast of Kythira, and was owned by Lord Elgin, who is famously known for transporting antiquities, including parts of the Acropolis' architectural decorative sculptures. This year's excavation explored areas to the west and north of the remaining hull of the ship, aiming to uncover any remnants that might hint at the vessel's structure or cargo.
