K. Vaitiekūnas on measures to control fuel prices: "We will talk to the Competition Council"
Lithuania's Finance Minister K. Vaitiekūnas announced plans to collaborate with the Competition Council to monitor fuel price changes amid rising costs and international oil price fluctuations.
Lithuanian Finance Minister K. Vaitiekūnas recently addressed the issue of soaring fuel prices, particularly diesel, during a press conference at the Seimas. He acknowledged the sensitive nature of the situation, attributing the price increases to international trade dynamics and turmoil in Iran affecting oil prices. Vaitiekūnas emphasized the importance of looking into the practices of other countries that have successfully managed similar issues to inform local strategies.
Furthermore, he highlighted that institutions are currently focused on watching the geopolitical situation and strengthening the role of competition oversight authorities. This involves empowering these institutions to better monitor price changes at gas stations and ensuring price stability. He indicated that discussions will begin with the Competition Council, aiming to enhance the agency's capacity to address concerns surrounding rising fuel prices effectively.
Importantly, Vaitiekūnas noted that there are currently no plans to consider temporary or long-term tax changes in relation to fuel pricing. This suggests a commitment to managing the fuel price crisis through regulatory oversight rather than fiscal policy adjustments, reflecting an approach that prioritizes market monitoring and intervention where necessary.
