Hungary rules out compromises on Ukraine loan

Hungary remains steadfast in opposing an EU bailout for Ukraine unless Kiev resumes Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline, according to Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced that the nation will continue to resist any European Union bailout for Ukraine until Ukraine resumes its Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline. The tension stems from Hungary's grievances, claiming that Ukraine halted vital oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia to apply pressure. In February, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had already vetoed a โ‚ฌ90 billion emergency loan from the EU in response to this situation.

The relationship between Hungary and Ukraine has been strained, with Hungary accusing Ukraine of deliberately cutting off oil supplies after Kiev claimed that the Druzhba pipeline suffered damage due to Russian strikes. While Moscow has denied causing such damage, Hungary has asserted that Ukraine's actions are politically motivated. Szijjarto cited a mix of contradictory information from Ukraine regarding the pipeline damage, which has only fueled Hungary's unwillingness to support further financial assistance or sanctions against Russia.

Szijjarto also emphasized Hungary's firm stance by stating that they will not support any future decisions that involve financial aid or political advantages for Ukraine. This development highlights the intricate geopolitics within Eastern Europe, where Hungary's firm position not only impacts Hungary-Ukraine relations but also complicates the EU's collective response to Russia's ongoing military actions and the humanitarian crises unfolding in Ukraine.
