Russian oil prices break records! How much is Putin earning by selling expensive crude to India?

Following the Ukraine war, Russia initially sold cheap oil to India, but prices for Russian crude have now reached record highs amid ongoing global tensions.

Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia had significantly discounted its oil prices for India due to Western sanctions. Indian refiners capitalized on this opportunity, making substantial profits from the cheaper Russian crude. However, the situation has changed as global conflicts intensify, leading to rising prices for Russian oil, which is now more expensive for India than it has been since the beginning of the war.

According to a Bloomberg report, the price of Urals crude oil from Russia arriving in India has surged to a record high of $98.93 per barrel, inclusive of shipping charges. This spike is attributed to a discount on Russian oil announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, impacting global oil prices. The rising costs of Urals crude for India underscore the challenges facing the country amidst heightened geopolitical tensions and energy market volatility.

The increase in Russian oil prices coincides with rising global oil prices, driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This could have significant implications for India's energy security and economic outlook, as the nation seeks to balance its energy needs with the rising costs of imported oil, leaving it vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices during a time of instability.
