FC Bayern: DFB rejects appeal, Luis Díaz remains suspended

FC Bayern's appeal against Luis Díaz's suspension was rejected by the German Football Association's sports court, leaving him sidelined for the upcoming match against Union Berlin.

FC Bayern Munich faced a setback when their appeal to overturn the suspension of Colombian forward Luis Díaz was dismissed by the sports court of the German Football Association (DFB). The court deemed the appeal ‘unfounded’ in a single judge procedure, meaning that Díaz will miss the Bundesliga match against Union Berlin scheduled for Saturday. The incident that led to this suspension occurred during the game against Bayer Leverkusen, in which Díaz received a yellow-red card in the 84th minute, contributing to a fiercely contested draw of 1-1.

Referee Christian Dingert, who officiated the match, later admitted to the media that he considered the decision to issue a yellow-red card as a mistake. He stated, 'Looking at the footage now, it is not a penalty. The yellow-red is very harsh, and I would not give that now.' However, the DFB’s sports court clarified that the referee's later admission of error does not carry enough weight to reverse the decision once it has been made. The chair of the court, Stephan Oberholz, emphasized that the matter was a factual decision that can only be overturned under strict conditions of obvious error or misjudgment.

This ruling raises discussions within the Bundesliga about the consistency and fairness of disciplinary assessments in football, as clubs like Bayern seek to protect their players’ rights while maintaining the integrity of on-pitch officiating. With the suspension remaining in place, Bayern will have to adjust their lineup accordingly, further highlighting the implications of such red cards not just for individual players but for the team’s tactical strategy in critical matches against key rivals like Union Berlin.
