NAS urges increased investment in research, innovation

The Nigerian Academy of Science has called for more government investment in scientific research and innovation for national growth.

The Nigerian Academy of Science has issued a statement advocating for heightened investment in scientific research and innovation by both Federal and State Governments, underscoring its essential role for national growth and sustainability. The call was articulated by the academy’s President Abubakar Sambo and Public Affairs Secretary Chinedum Babalola, emphasizing that without significant funding, the country risks stagnation in addressing critical national challenges.

In its outlined 2026 agenda, the academy expressed concern over the alarming level of underinvestment in research and development across Nigeria, as well as governance issues within educational and research institutions that hinder progress. They highlighted that scientific solutions are increasingly necessary to tackle urgent issues like climate change, energy transition, public health crises, food security, and the need for improved industrial competitiveness.

The academy pointed out that countries achieving sustained economic growth and technological advancement have historically done so through deliberate, long-term investments in science and research. Therefore, it stressed that Nigeria must learn from these examples and prioritize funding in these areas to foster innovation and ultimately drive the nation towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
