Rights group calls for urgent investigation into Afghan's death after 24 hours of detention in America
A human rights group is urging an investigation into the death of an Afghan migrant who died shortly after being detained by US immigration authorities.
A human rights group led by American veterans is demanding an urgent inquiry into the death of an Afghan migrant who died while in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Texas, just 24 hours after his detention. The individual, Mohammad Nazr Bakhtyar, had previously worked with the US military in Afghanistan and was awaiting a decision on his asylum application in the United States.
According to 'Afghan Evac,' an organization advocating for refugee rights, Bakhtyar lived with his wife and six children in a suburb of Dallas. He was reportedly arrested by federal security officials as he was dropping his children off at school. His death, which occurred a day later under unclear circumstances, raises serious concerns regarding the treatment of migrants and asylum seekers in ICE custody.
This incident marks at least the twelfth reported death of an individual in ICE custody this year alone, coinciding with a heightened immigration crackdown initiated during President Trump's administration. Last year, there were 31 reported deaths of individuals held by ICE, indicating a troubling trend in the agency's management of detainees and prompting calls for reform within its practices.
