Tecpetrol and Pampa Energía sue Enarsa for gas payment debts

Tecpetrol and Pampa Energía have filed a lawsuit against Enarsa over unpaid gas payments following months of warnings from the sector.

Tecpetrol, part of the Techint Group, and Pampa Energía, owned by businessman Marcelo Mindlin, have taken legal action against the state energy company Enarsa, demanding the fulfillment of contractual agreements. This move comes as a result of two years of accumulated debts owed to gas producers, which have been a significant point of discussion between oil chambers and the Argentine government over the past year. The total debt amounts to approximately $130 million related to the contracts from the Gas.Ar Plan, a program initiated in 2020 aimed at ensuring stable gas supplies within the country.

The Gas.Ar Plan was designed to provide a minimum purchase price for natural gas and has been extended multiple times due to ongoing supply concerns. The situation escalated to a critical point where both Tecpetrol and Pampa Energía, despite Pampa's historically good relations with the Milei administration, found it necessary to take legal steps after numerous delays in payments. The lawsuit signifies growing tension between private energy companies and the government amidst worsening economic conditions in Argentina.

As the Argentine government grapples with energy supply strains and fiscal deficits, this legal action from established companies like Tecpetrol and Pampa Energía highlights the fragility of the energy sector and underscores the need for clearer contractual commitments between public and private entities. The outcome of this lawsuit could have wider implications for energy policy and investor confidence in Argentina, especially in terms of the government's ability to meet its contractual obligations within a turbulent economic landscape.
