"Absolutely Inopportune": An Entity Rejected a Key Deregulation in the Foot-and-Mouth Vaccination Program

The Rural Associations Confederation of Buenos Aires and La Pampa rejected the government's deregulation in the vaccination program against foot-and-mouth disease, allowing producers to choose their veterinarians starting next year.

The Rural Associations Confederation of Buenos Aires and La Pampa (Carbap) has voiced strong opposition to recent government changes in the vaccination program for foot-and-mouth disease. The new measures, implemented by the national government, allow livestock producers the autonomy to select their own veterinarians for administering vaccinations beginning next year. This marks a significant shift from previous regulations, which mandated the use of designated veterinarians approved by agricultural foundations.

On Friday, the National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) announced a resolution updating the participation framework for professionals involved in vaccination campaigns against foot-and-mouth disease and bovine brucellosis. The resolution permits the individual provision of veterinary services starting January 1, 2027, effectively deregulating the process of selecting veterinarians for vaccination, a move that has raised concerns within the agricultural community.

Carbap argues that this deregulation jeopardizes the integrity of the vaccination program, claiming that the decision lacks technical justification and was made hastily. The organization emphasizes the importance of maintaining strict oversight in vaccination processes to ensure the health of livestock and the broader agricultural sector, as any lapses could potentially lead to serious outbreaks of disease among cattle, affecting both local farmers and the national economy.
