The man who died in Jämsä Himoks was skiing with friends – Tukes investigating the conditions of the accident slope
The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a skier at Himos ski resort in Jämsä, where safety conditions are under scrutiny.
The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has initiated an investigation following the tragic death of a skier at Himos ski resort in Jämsä, Finland. This inquiry aims to determine whether there were any shortcomings in safety measures at the facility. Leading expert Jaakko Laitinen has stated that Tukes will examine the slope's conditions and the actions of the staff during the incident. Although Himos Companies has already reached out to Tukes, the agency is still awaiting the formal notification required by law.
Elsi Ojala, the CEO of Himos Companies, mentioned that the most recent inspection of the ski slopes at Himos by Tukes took place in January 2024. According to the report from that inspection, slope safety was deemed to have been managed appropriately at that time. This raises questions about the oversight and effectiveness of safety protocols, especially in light of the recent incident, where a 50-year-old Estonian man lost his life due to an accident while skiing.
The Internal Finnish Police is conducting an investigation into the fatal accident as a death investigation. According to Crime Commissioner Veli-Pekka Välisaari, the deceased skier veered off a transition route and collided with a rock in the area. This incident has sparked concerns about the safety of ski slopes and the adequacy of preventative measures in place, highlighting the need for continuous evaluation of conditions at ski resorts to ensure the safety of all visitors.
