OLP Workers: We do not accept the use of ports for military purposes
Workers at the Piraeus Port Authority have expressed their refusal to allow the use of the port for military shipments, particularly concerning impending deliveries of military supplies to Israel.
Workers from four labor unions at the Piraeus Port Organization (OLP) have intervened after reports indicated the imminent arrival of ships carrying military supplies destined for Israel. These unions include the Federation of Port Employees of Greece, the Union of Technicians and Operators of OLP, and others, who collectively voiced their strong opposition to using the ports for military operations. They emphasized their commitment to not allowing the involvement of Greece in what they deem an unjust and dangerous war.
In a public statement, the representatives made it clear that they uphold a long-standing position that rejects any military use of the ports. They articulated concerns not only about the ethical implications of shipping military supplies but also about the broader impact this could have on their community, the nation, and international relations. The unions assert that port facilities should not be used to facilitate military conflicts and should operate for peaceful trade and services.
Furthermore, the management of OLP is reported to have accepted the collective request from the unions, indicating that the workers' unified stance against military involvement is being recognized. This decision highlights the significance of labor voices in political and social matters, especially in the context of ongoing global conflicts and their ramifications on local economies and communities.
