Believers in Bavaria: The churches record nearly 124,000 exits
In Bavaria, nearly 124,000 people left the Catholic and Protestant churches last year, with the Catholic Church seeing a decrease in exits while the Protestant Church experienced an increase.
In Bavaria last year, approximately 81,852 individuals left the Catholic Church, a decrease of about 5,300 from the previous year according to the German Bishops' Conference (DBK). Meanwhile, the Evangelical Church in Bavaria (ELKB) saw around 42,000 members depart, marking an increase from 39,486 exits in 2024. This brings the total exits from both major churches in Bavaria to nearly 124,000, highlighting a significant trend in religious disaffiliation in the region.
The declining membership in both churches is concerning, as the Protestant Church's membership has fallen below two million, while the Catholic Church still accounts for over 5.3 million members in the Free State of Bavaria. Additionally, both churches face the challenge of higher mortality rates among their members compared to new baptisms, which further exacerbates their dwindling membership.
Though the total number of exits has decreased, church authorities caution that this should not be viewed as a sign of improvement. Instead, they interpret this trend as an acknowledgment of ongoing reform processes and efforts to address historical abuse cases within the churches, which continue to affect public perception and membership levels. The situation underscores the complexities facing religious institutions in contemporary society as they navigate past mistakes and the changing dynamics of faith in the region.
