Decathlon announces ten new stores in Spain and bets on the urban format
Decathlon plans to open ten new stores in Spain by the first half of 2026, focusing on urban locations to increase its presence in city centers.
Decathlon, the sports equipment distribution company, is entering a new phase of growth as it seeks to enhance its presence in urban centers across Spain. Announced on Monday, the company revealed plans for up to ten new store openings in the first half of 2026, marking the highest number of inaugurations projected by Decathlon in Spain in recent years. Among these, seven will adopt the Decathlon City format, aimed specifically at urban settings.
The urban expansion is set to include locations in cities such as Orense, Valencia, Córdoba, Madrid, and three stores in Barcelona. This initiative reflects Decathlon's strategy to cater to a growing consumer base in metropolitan areas, where convenience and accessibility are paramount. Additionally, the company will introduce three temporary pop-up stores in Mogán (Las Palmas), Magaluf (Baleares), and Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz), further diversifying its approach to reach customers in popular locales.
This proactive expansion comes at a time when urban retail dynamics are shifting, with more individuals looking for specialized sports products in easily accessible city locations. Decathlon's strategy not only indicates the company's confidence in the Spanish market but also illustrates a broader trend in retail where urban formats are becoming increasingly attractive to consumers. The upcoming openings are likely to bolster Decathlon's competitive positioning against other retailers in the sporting goods sector.
