Christians voice support for the re-proposal of the anti-discrimination law, which has been drifting for 19 years
Christian leaders in South Korea are advocating for the re-introduction of the anti-discrimination law, emphasizing its alignment with Christian values despite opposition from conservative groups.
In South Korea, the debate surrounding the anti-discrimination law has resurfaced as Christian leaders express their support for its re-introduction, after a 19-year struggle to secure its passage. A prominent pastor, Lee Dong-hwan, from the Equal World Network, stated that love and justice are central tenets of Christianity and that the values pursued by the anti-discrimination law correspond with the teachings of Jesus, who advocated for the marginalized and the socially weak. This perspective contrasts sharply with the strong opposition from conservative Protestant factions, who have historically worked to block the law's implementation every time it has been proposed in Parliament.
The effort to advance the anti-discrimination law faces significant cultural and political challenges, primarily due to the backlash from conservative Christian groups. Since its initial proposal in 2007, the law has not gained traction, often stalling in the National Assembly amid fierce resistance. Despite numerous attempts to pass the law—with over ten different versions introduced—the combination of conservative pushback and a cautious political landscape has resulted in repeated failures. Recent introductions of the law by progressive lawmakers in the current 22nd National Assembly signal a renewed push for its enactment.
As the campaign against the anti-discrimination law intensifies, conservative groups have labeled their opposition a patriotic movement akin to significant historical protests in South Korea. They argue that the law poses a threat to religious freedom, potentially penalizing individuals for expressing their beliefs against homosexuality. In response to this backdrop, a coalition of supportive Christian groups organized a press conference to raise awareness and advocate for the law's passage, urging Christian values of equality and justice in societal governance.
