A Blow from the Prime Minister of Belgium: 'No One Dares to Say It Out Loud'

Belgium's Prime Minister De Wever calls for normalizing relations with Russia and suggests that European leaders agree privately but are afraid to speak out publicly.

In a recent statement, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever emphasized the necessity of normalizing relations with Russia to regain access to cheaper energy resources. He argues that the current approach, which supports Ukraine militarily while simultaneously harming Russia's economy, is ineffective without support from the U.S. De Wever believes that the only viable option left is to negotiate an agreement with Russia, indicating that in private discussions, European leaders often share his views but lack the courage to express them publicly.

Furthermore, De Wever urged that the conflict should be resolved with a focus on European interests, acknowledging the complexity of dealing with Putin without being naïve. He recalled that within the European Union, opinions on the matter remain divided, with leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban advocating for direct negotiations with Russia, while Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia firmly oppose such approaches.

Criticism of De Wever's comments came from Belgium's Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, who questioned the timing and appropriateness of calling for negotiations under the current circumstances. This political divide within Belgium reflects broader tensions in the EU regarding how to handle relations with Russia amidst ongoing conflicts and the energy crisis brought on by geopolitical tensions.
