Man arrested with drugs and wild bird after police approach in Santarém
A man was arrested in Santarém, Brazil, after being found with drugs and a wild bird during a police stop.
On Sunday, October 15, a man in Santarém, Pará, was arrested for possession of cocaine and a wild bird, following a police intervention in the Aeroporto Velho neighborhood. The arrest took place after officers from the 1st Company of Environmental Policing (1º Cipamb) noticed a vehicle exhibiting suspicious behavior, prompting them to stop and search the driver.
During the search, authorities discovered a quantity of cocaine, which the suspect claimed was for his personal use. Given that the driver was accompanied by his child, police escorted him home to ensure the child's safety before proceeding with their investigation. Upon arriving at his residence, they uncovered a caged wild bird, specifically a "curió," which constituted an environmental crime under Brazilian law.
The suspect was subsequently taken to the 16th Civil Police Station where the case was formally registered, and further legal actions were anticipated. This incident highlights ongoing issues related to drug possession and the trafficking of protected wildlife in Brazil, drawing attention to the need for continued vigilance by law enforcement in these areas.
