South Africa: New Play Honors Murdered Environmental Activist Fikile Ntshangase

A new play titled 'Isitha Sabantu' honors the life and legacy of Fikile Ntshangase, a murdered environmental activist who opposed coal mining near Hluhluwe-iMfolozi park.

Fikile Ntshangase was a passionate environmental activist who dedicated her life to fighting against the expansion of coal mining near Hluhluwe-iMfolozi park in South Africa. In 2020, she was tragically murdered in her home by unidentified gunmen, and her death is believed to be linked to her activism and efforts to mobilize her community against the mining project. Despite the outcry and the attention drawn to her case, five years later, no arrests have been made, highlighting the ongoing threats faced by environmental activists in the region.

In response to her untimely death, the theatre production 'Isitha Sabantu' opened at the Market Theatre on March 8. This new play, produced by Empatheatre, delves into the challenges that climate activists endure, particularly focusing on issues of land rights, resource extraction, and the broader climate crisis. Inspired by extensive research and consultations with the community, the play generates awareness about the dangers that activists like Ntshangase encounter in their pursuit of environmental justice.

By utilizing puppetry and traditional songs, 'Isitha Sabantu' not only pays tribute to Fikile Ntshangase's legacy but also aims to ignite conversations about the critical issues of vulnerability faced by environmental defenders. The production serves as both a memorial and a rallying cry to protect those who put their lives at risk in the fight for a sustainable and just future, reminding audiences of the personal and societal stakes involved in environmental activism.
