Man sentenced to 13 years for attempted murder after attacking former classmate and her parents with a hammer

A man has been sentenced to 13 years for attempted murder after he attacked his former classmate and her parents with a hammer in their home.

A 23-year-old unemployed man, Koichiro Tsuyama, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Hiroshima District Court for attempted murder and other charges after attacking a former classmate and her parents. The incident occurred in February when Tsuyama broke into the victim's home through an unlocked window in the early hours of the morning and assaulted all three family members with a hammer, inflicting severe injuries on the mother and serious injuries on the daughter, while the father sustained minor injuries. In the court ruling, presiding judge Hiroshi Sugatani noted that the victims had done nothing to provoke the attack and described Tsuyama's actions as extremely selfish and centered only on his own interests. The attack was motivated by Tsuyama's obsessive behavior towards the woman, which began when he contacted her relentlessly after enrolling in university in 2021, despite her attempts to cut off communication after her father warned him against his advances. This obsession escalated to a revenge plot in which he intended to commit sexual violence against her. Judge Sugatani emphasized the unspeakable fear the victims experienced in their own home, which should have been a safe haven, and highlighted the significant physical and psychological suffering they endured. The court's verdict serves as a stark reminder of the impact of domestic violence and obsessive behavior, prompting discussions about the need for better community awareness and preventive measures against such attacks.
