Most believe that sickness benefits and job security are greater in the public sector
A recent survey indicates that a majority of Icelanders believe sickness benefits and job security are more favorable in the public sector compared to the private sector.
A recent survey conducted by MaskÃna reveals that a significant majority of Icelanders perceive sickness benefits and job security to be superior in the public sector compared to the private sector. Around 70 percent of respondents stated that they believe the rights to sick leave are greater in public employment, while only 7 percent felt that such rights are better in the private sector. The survey sought to distinguish opinions on whether these benefits were equal between sectors or if one provided more favorable conditions than the other.
In terms of job security, the perception is even more pronounced, with 83 percent of participants affirming that they perceive greater job security within the public sector. A mere 10 percent of respondents felt job security was equal across both sectors. The survey also highlights gender differences in perceptions; a higher percentage of men (77.5 percent) than women (63.5 percent) believe that sickness benefits are more generous in public employment, indicating potential gender disparities in occupational perceptions and experiences.
These findings may be relevant for policymakers and employers as they reflect public sentiment regarding employment conditions, which can influence recruitment and retention strategies in both sectors. Understanding these perceptions could drive improvements in the private sector's offerings to match or exceed public sector benefits, especially in a competitive labor market.
