Braided Hair Considered 'Unusual Hairstyle,' Lawyer's Association Issues Improvement Recommendation to High School
The Osaka Bar Association issued an improvement recommendation to a high school for violating students' human rights by forcing them to remove their braided hairstyles during a school event.
The Osaka Bar Association has announced a recommendation for the improvement of policies at Osaka Prefectural Kanan High School after a group of students were forced to dismantle their braided hairstyles. The incident occurred during a sports festival in June 2022 when two female students, who had styled their hair in braids as part of a cheerleading group, were confronted by school authorities for allegedly violating school rules against 'unusual hairstyles'. The Bar Association determined this was a violation of the students' human rights, as no prior explanation regarding the hairstyle policy was provided by the school.
