G. Gerapetritis: We call on Iran to respect maritime law - Greece does not intend to become involved in the war

Greek Foreign Minister G. Gerapetritis has emphasized the importance of maritime law and called on Iran to respect it, stating that Greece does not intend to engage in the ongoing conflict in the region.

In a recent statement made during a meeting of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis highlighted Greece's stance on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, advocating for the free movement of all vessels in the area. He urged Iran to adhere to international maritime law, underlining the critical importance of freedom of navigation not just for oil prices, but for the entire supply chain, as disturbances could have global repercussions.

Gerapetritis pointed out the ongoing 'Shield' operation in the region, which includes participation from only two EU member states, indicating a need for greater European solidarity in addressing maritime security concerns. He stressed that the issue of maritime safety is vital for economic stability and the efficient functioning of international trade, and that Greece is committed to upholding these principles in its foreign policy.

Additionally, Gerapetritis announced his intention to raise the issue of an attack on a Greek vessel in international waters of the Black Sea with his European counterparts, indicating Greece's awareness of regional threats to its maritime interests. This highlights Greece's proactive approach to international diplomacy and its efforts to safeguard its national interests amid escalating tensions in the region.
