Debate on Firewall: CSU demands clarification regarding chat group with AfD in the EU Parliament
The leader of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Alexander Hoffmann, has called for clarification regarding the controversial cooperation between CDU and CSU in the European Parliament with the AfD and other right-wing parties.
Alexander Hoffmann, the leader of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has raised concerns about the questionable collaboration between CDU and CSU members of the European Parliament and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. During an interview on RTL and ntv's 'Frühstart', he stressed the necessity to examine the discussions occurring within these chat groups, particularly highlighting a commitment to maintain a clear distance from the AfD. Hoffmann asserted that there would be no collaboration with the AfD, citing its objectives that threaten to dismantle the Union itself.
The controversy stems from investigations by the Deutsche Presseagentur, revealing that members of the European People's Party (EVP), which includes the Union’s members, have collaborated with far-right factions in the European Parliament. Evidence shows that they have been involved in a joint chat group and met in person to work on a legislative proposal aimed at tightening migration policies. This proposal includes measures that would allow the deportation of asylum seekers to 'Return Hubs' situated in countries outside the European Union.
Hoffmann's statements reflect growing tensions within German political factions concerning how to address migration and cooperation with extreme right parties. As the EU faces increasing pressures regarding migration policies, the implications of such collaborations could potentially reshape political alliances and public perception towards both the involved parties and the broader migration debate within the EU.
