US religious freedom commission blasts Indian organizations
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has called for sanctions against India's intelligence agency and a social service organization for violating religious freedom.
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a US government watchdog, has recommended sanctions against India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) due to their alleged violations of religious freedom in the country. The commission stated that these entities have either actively participated or shown a high tolerance for systemic abuses of religious liberty, prompting the call for punitive measures.
The USCIRF's recommendations include freezing assets and prohibiting the entry of these organizations and their representatives into the United States, emphasizing the severe nature of religious freedom violations occurring in India. Such a designation could lead to increased diplomatic tensions between the US and India, particularly as it comes at a time when the Indian government has been under scrutiny for its treatment of minority communities.
Moreover, the USCIRF has urged that India be categorized as a 'country of particular concern.' This label could have significant implications for India’s international relations, especially considering its strategic partnership with the US. The USCIRF's statements reflect growing concerns over the status of religious freedoms globally and highlight the protective measures that the US intends to advocate for against reported abuses.
