Metsähallitus promises rewards for finding certain eagle nests
Metsähallitus announces rewards for locating previously unknown nests of the bald eagle, with a focus on environmental protection and wildlife management.
Metsähallitus, the Finnish state enterprise responsible for the management of lands and waters, has initiated a program to reward individuals for discovering previously untracked nests of the bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). A monetary reward of 100 euros will be offered for each nest reported, particularly in reindeer herding areas where these nests are seldom documented. The organization aims to enhance its conservation efforts by increasing awareness and tracking of these majestic birds residing in remote forested areas.
The organization emphasizes the importance of cautious reporting. Individuals interested in reporting a nest must provide their personal details, nest coordinates, and location information, ideally accompanied by a photograph. Eetu Sundvall, a special expert in nature conservation from Metsähallitus, warns that the bald eagle is a highly sensitive bird which tends to abandon its nest at the slightest sign of disturbance, making careful observation essential to avoid revealing the nest's location.
Metsähallitus's initiative represents a significant effort to improve the conservation status of the bald eagle population in Finland. By engaging the public in these conservation activities, it not only aims to locate undiscovered nests but also raises awareness about the species and its ecological requirements, supporting broader wildlife protection strategies in Finland.
