Dan Jørgensen: Europe is in a price crisis, but energy supply is secured
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen states that Europe is experiencing a price crisis in energy, but reassures that the energy supply is secure, diminishing the need for drastic interventions.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen addressed the current energy situation in Europe, highlighting that while the continent is facing a "price crisis," it is not experiencing a supply crisis. This distinction is significant as it reduces the urgency for aggressive policy measures to combat rising energy costs. The remarks were made ahead of a meeting with EU energy ministers in Brussels, where strategies to address the crisis will be discussed.
Jørgensen compared the current circumstances to the energy challenges of 2022, triggered largely by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He emphasized that Europe is now in a stronger position, largely due to an increase in renewable energy usage and a diversification of energy sources. These changes have contributed to enhanced energy security in the EU and reduced reliance on single sources of energy, which had been a major concern in previous years.
Despite the reassurances about supply security, Jørgensen acknowledged the pressing issue of high gas prices in Europe. He indicated that the EU needs to explore "targeted initiatives" that can provide immediate relief in response to soaring prices. This approach aims to balance the need for short-term solutions with the ongoing transition to a more sustainable energy model, ensuring that Europe can effectively manage both current and future energy demands.
