Prosecutor Reform Promotion Team Leader Says, 'Supplementary Investigation Rights Should Be Considered Reasonably from the Public's Perspective'

The head of the Prosecutor Reform Promotion Team advocated for a focus on enhancing legal services for the public in discussions about supplementary investigation rights for prosecutors.

On November 16, Yoon Chang-ryeol, head of the Prosecutor Reform Promotion Team and Secretary of the State Affairs Office, emphasized the importance of viewing supplementary investigation rights from the perspective of the public rather than allowing it to devolve into a dispute of power between prosecutors and investigative agencies. Speaking at a forum titled 'Supplementary Investigation and Supplementary Investigation Requests from the Public's Perspective,' he urged that discussions should focus on how to provide better criminal justice services to citizens. Yoon reiterated that the fundamental principle of prosecutor reform is the protection of citizens' rights through the separation of investigation and prosecution.

In his remarks, Yoon highlighted President Lee Jae-myung's statement that the ultimate goal of prosecutor reform is to safeguard human rights, protect citizens' rights, and ensure that criminals are appropriately punished for their actions, ultimately serving a justice system that prioritizes the public. He underlined the need for a criminal justice system that effectively investigates cases and prosecutes offenders while protecting the rights of the victims and the general public.

Previously, on November 11, the promotion team co-hosted a forum with the Korean Bar Association regarding supplementary investigation rights. During that event, Yoon acknowledged the urgency of addressing delays in investigations for citizen benefit and the need for accountability and effectiveness in the investigation and prosecution processes. He committed to listening more closely to public opinions and voices on these critical issues as part of the government's efforts to find meaningful solutions.
