M. Sinkevičius evaluated R. Žemaitaitis's statements about March 11: he allows himself a lot
M. Sinkevičius criticized R. Žemaitaitis's remarks regarding the events of March 11, 1990, emphasizing the importance of historical context and the need to focus less on such statements.
M. Sinkevičius, a leader in the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, expressed strong criticism of R. Žemaitaitis's recent comments concerning the significance of March 11, 1990, when Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union. Sinkevičius remarked that it was misguided to talk about upheaval in relation to such a pivotal historical date, describing Žemaitaitis's statements as 'nonsense.' He asserted that all Lithuanians witnessed history on that day, including himself, and any rhetoric that undermines the legitimacy of that event is inappropriate.
Sinkevičius sought to clarify that their coalition recognizes and works with the 'Nemuno aušra' political group, but does not endorse Žemaitaitis's personal views. He stated that the problems often stem from the actions and statements of the leader himself, rather than the coalition as a whole. According to him, Žemaitaitis exhibits a tendency to take excessive liberties with his speech, which sometimes leads to unfounded assertions that distract from substantive political discourse.
Highlighting the need for a collective understanding and respect towards Lithuania's historical milestones, Sinkevičius urged for a reduction in attention given to Žemaitaitis's comments. He argued that by focusing on his provocative statements, the media inadvertently provides him with a platform to amplify his views further, which in turn threatens the integrity of political dialogue in Lithuania.
