Customer Refused Sale of Energy Drink in Store - This is What Happened in Court
A Finnish court ruled against a store employee who refused to sell an energy drink to a Roma woman based on her ethnic background, resulting in fines for both the employee and the merchant.
In a recent court ruling, a Finnish woman of Roma descent was denied the sale of an energy drink at a Northern Karelia market due to her ethnic background. The incident occurred during a visit the woman made in February 2024, where she was confronted by a male clerk who refused to serve her despite her not being in traditional Roma attire. The refusal was captured on video by the woman, which became a critical piece of evidence in the case.
The court proceedings revealed the clerk's justification for the refusal was rooted in alleged concerns over theft, as some individuals had stolen from the market earlier that year. However, the clerk did not allege that the woman was part of the group responsible for the theft. The woman's video showed her pressing the clerk for answers, which highlighted the discriminatory nature of the incident and garnered public attention.
As a result of the court's findings, the employee was fined €1,240, while the merchant was fined €1,440 for allowing such discriminatory practices to occur within their establishment. This case underlines the ongoing issues of discrimination in Finland, particularly toward ethnic minorities, and reinforces the importance of customer rights regardless of their background.
