The first columbaria will be established in Panevėžys district: to be set up in two cemeteries
Two cemeteries in Panevėžys district are set to get the first columbaria in the area as a response to changing burial traditions and a decreasing number of traditional grave maintainers.
Panevėžys district will see the introduction of its first columbaria situated in the city's major cemeteries, namely the Krekenavos and Ramygalos cemeteries. According to Antanas Pocius, the district mayor, this initiative addresses the pressing need for more relevant burial options within the region. A specific site has already been selected on a hillside for the columbarium in Ramygalai, making it a significant development considering that these cemeteries are among the largest in the area.
The Ramygalai community leader, Valdas Chirv, emphasized the long-standing demand for such facilities due to demographic changes — an aging population and increasing youth migration to larger cities and abroad. This trend has raised concerns over the custodianship of traditional graves, necessitating the adoption of newer practices that align with the changing societal dynamics and preferences. The construction reflects a shift in burial customs, with columbaria offering a modern solution to an evolving community.
The mayor's decision is not merely about providing immediate solutions but also a forward-thinking approach to accommodate future needs. The successful implementation of these columbaria could potentially lead to similar projects in other locales within the district, signaling a broader acceptance and adaptation of contemporary practices in burial traditions as local demographics continue to shift.
