Heavy rains in Kenya have caused severe flooding, resulting in 66 fatalities and widespread damage to infrastructure.
Kenya is currently grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding that has claimed at least 66 lives due to heavy rains over the past week. Police confirmed the rising death toll as flash floods emerged from swollen rivers, inundating homes and damaging essential infrastructure such as roads, power lines, and water systems. Despite ongoing rainfall, there were no new fatalities reported in Nairobi overnight, which has been significantly affected by the extreme weather conditions.
The flooding situation worsened as both the Nairobi and Ngong Rivers overflowed, creating hazards for nearby neighborhoods. Rescue teams have been actively engaged in the affected areas, managing to save 11 individuals from a minibus taxi trapped in the rushing waters, along with two children who were rescued from a flooded residence in Kilimani. In light of these dangers, local authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to safer locations, and over 2,000 people have already fled their homes seeking shelter from the floods.
In response to the crisis, President William Ruto has announced that emergency assistance, including food and medical supplies, is being dispatched to the communities impacted by the floods. This situation underscores the urgent need for effective disaster management strategies in the face of increasingly severe weather patterns associated with climate change, as communities across Kenya confront the devastating effects of natural disasters.
