AFP: Neste received deliveries from Indonesian companies involved in fraud allegations
Finnish fuel giant Neste has received several shipments from Indonesian companies that are being investigated for widespread fraud related to palm oil, according to an AFP and SourceMaterial investigation.
A recent investigation by AFP and SourceMaterial has revealed that Neste, a major Finnish fuel company, has received multiple deliveries from Indonesian firms currently under scrutiny for involvement in fraudulent activities tied to palm oil production. Indonesian authorities are probing allegations that local companies and government officials colluded to falsely label regular palm oil as wastewater products from palm oil processing (POME), potentially leading to significant financial implications.
The investigation has resulted in the arrest of 11 individuals suspected of embezzling state funds during the years 2022 to 2024, with allegations of bribery also surfacing in relation to the fraud. Despite the serious nature of these charges, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Neste or the other companies receiving the products were aware of the fraudulent activities or participated in them, indicating that these businesses may have unwittingly been caught up in this scandal.
The Indonesian government is viewing this situation as an economic loss, as there is a higher tax imposed on palm oil, and misclassifying the product as a POME item has reportedly resulted in millions of dollars in revenue losses for the authorities. Experts interviewed by AFP express concerns about the systemic issues surrounding palm oil production and the governance of supply chains, highlighting the urgent need for increased transparency and oversight in the industry to prevent such fraudulent practices.
