This very common habit can shorten your phone's battery life

Fast charging can quickly refill your smartphone's battery but may accelerate battery deterioration over time, according to an expert.

New smartphones offer increasingly faster charging, allowing a fully depleted battery to be recharged in a fraction of the time it used to take. However, this rapid charging method can have adverse effects on the battery lifespan. Ari Hentunen, a battery expert from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, explains that while fast charging can be convenient, consistently using high currents to charge batteries to full capacity can slightly accelerate their degradation over time.

Hentunen advises that charging at lower currents is generally better for battery health, although it can be challenging to control this in practice. Some manufacturers provide options to influence charging speeds; for instance, newer Samsung Galaxy S phones feature settings that can disable fast charging. In situations where such an option isn't available, users can utilize older chargers that do not support fast charging to help preserve battery life longer.

At home, many users likely have several old chargers which may suit their needs, potentially providing a solution for optimal charging practices. As smartphone technology continues to advance, being aware of the impact of charging habits on battery longevity can help users make informed decisions about their charging routines and prolong the life of their devices.
