Liberia: NCD Launches Historic Nationwide Tour to Assess Needs of Persons With Disabilities

The National Commission on Disabilities in Liberia has initiated a nationwide tour to assess the needs of persons with disabilities and improve their living conditions.

The National Commission on Disabilities (NCD) in Liberia has embarked on a historic nationwide tour aimed at assessing the needs and circumstances of persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the country. This initiative represents a significant move by the newly appointed leadership of the NCD to not only engage directly with PWDs but also to interact with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPWDs) across Liberia's 15 counties. The goal of the tour is to obtain firsthand information that will inform policy reforms and various program interventions targeted at improving the welfare of individuals living with disabilities.

The initiative is in alignment with the broader vision set forth by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. under the government's ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development. This agenda is centered around ensuring equity, empowerment, and inclusion for all citizens, particularly marginalized groups such as those with disabilities. By prioritizing visits to rural communities and remote towns, the NCD is striving to understand and address the disparities that exist between urban and rural areas regarding access to resources and support for PWDs.

As the NCD continues its nationwide engagement efforts, it is expected that the feedback received from these assessments will serve as a foundation for implementing changes that enhance the social and economic conditions of persons with disabilities in Liberia. This initiative not only reflects the commitment of the Liberian government to include all citizens in the development agenda but also emphasizes the need for ongoing dialogue and partnership with communities to create a more inclusive society for individuals living with disabilities.
