Ukrainian children know they could die any moment. Cameraman describes Generation Nika

Czech cameraman Vojtěch Hönig founded the non-profit organization Generation Nika after leaving Czech Television to teach teenagers from war-affected areas of Ukraine the craft of filmmaking.

Vojtěch Hönig, previously a cameraman for Czech Television, left his job to establish the non-profit organization Generation Nika in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. He conducts workshops for teenagers in war-torn areas, aiming to impart his filmmaking skills while providing a safe space for them to express their experiences. This initiative has taken on greater significance as many of the participants face the harsh reality of their circumstances, with some already joining the army and others continuing to work on their creative projects.

Hönig describes the important role these workshops play in helping the youth process their trauma and develop resilience. Many of the teenagers are aware of the imminent dangers, with a shared understanding that their lives could be disrupted at any moment. This awareness has imbued their creative expression with a unique depth, marked by the dual experiences of joy and pain that come from living in a conflict zone. Hönig highlights a notable observation that even younger children, aged 12 to 13, share this acute awareness of mortality, leading to profound insights in their art production.

Through Generation Nika, Hönig not only aims to nurture young talent in filmmaking but also to foster a sense of hope and a desire for a better future among the youth. The experience serves to reclaim a sense of childhood for these children—who have been thrust into adult roles due to the war—by empowering them with tools for both creative expression and resilience against their harsh reality. The organization’s upcoming documentary series captures this journey, shedding light on the intense experiences of young individuals navigating the complexities of war and artistry.
