Fire in hospital leaves ten dead in India

At least 10 people died in a fire that broke out in a trauma unit of a hospital in Odisha, India.

A tragic incident occurred in a hospital in the state of Odisha, eastern India, where at least ten individuals lost their lives in a fire that ignited in the trauma unit on Monday, October 16. Authorities have reported that five additional people were severely injured, although it remains unclear whether their injuries were caused by the fire or were pre-existing conditions. The fire is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit in the trauma center during the early hours of the day.

During the incident, at least 23 patients were in the intensive care unit, and tragically, ten of them died while being moved to safety away from the flames. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, expressed condolences and praised the medical team and security personnel for their bravery, stating that they risked their own lives to rescue patients. Many of these staff members also sustained injuries in the process and are currently receiving medical care.

This incident highlights the critical need for improved safety measures in hospitals, particularly in high-risk areas such as trauma units. As investigations continue regarding the cause of the fire, the state government may face pressure to address fire safety protocols in healthcare facilities across the region to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
