Businesses affected by one of world’s longest Covid lockdowns to receive $125m from Victorian government
Victorian businesses impacted by extensive Covid-19 lockdowns will receive $125 million from the state government following a class action settlement.
Businesses in Victoria, Australia, that suffered financial losses due to some of the world's longest Covid-19 lockdowns will be compensated with $125 million from the state government. This settlement stems from a class action lawsuit in which affected retail businesses, including the lead plaintiff 5 Boroughs NY Pty Ltd, argued that the government's lockdown measures, which restricted customer access from July to October 2020, resulted in significant economic damages. The case, pending in the supreme court, was initially scheduled for trial on March 10 but was postponed after the involved parties successfully negotiated a settlement. Barrister Adam Hochroth SC, who represented the plaintiffs, announced in court the parties had reached an agreement, noting the details of the settlement remain confidential but confirming the substantial compensation figure. This decision highlights the ongoing impact of Covid-19 measures on the economy and the legal responsibilities of governments to support affected businesses. It also reflects a growing trend of litigation aimed at government-imposed restrictions during the pandemic, as businesses seek accountability for losses incurred due to prolonged lockdowns.
