Mohbad: Group petitions police over alleged cyberbullying

A group in Nigeria has urged the police to investigate cyberbullying incidents related to the campaign for justice for the late artist Mohbad.

In the aftermath of the tragic death of Nigerian artist Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, the Coalition of Justice Advocates has formally petitioned the Nigeria Police Force to look into allegations of cyberbullying aimed at its members. This request was made during a press briefing held in Lagos, where the coalition, in collaboration with Olori Ebi Platform Worldwide, expressed their concerns about online harassment that they claim has been perpetuated by a Germany-based TikToker, referred to as Comfy. The coalition argues that these acts constitute both defamation and illegal handling of personal data, as they have coincided with the group's ongoing efforts to seek justice for the late singer.

During the press conference, spokesperson Mr. Kayode Adebiyi highlighted the campaigners’ commitment to act within the legal framework while providing various forms of support for their advocacy. He underscored the significance of their campaign, which aims to maintain public interest in the circumstances surrounding Mohbad's death. The coalition is striving to ensure transparency and justice, emphasizing that the abuses they have faced in the online space do not deter their resolve to fight for a cause they believe in.

The broader implications of this petition could extend beyond the immediate community as it brings attention to issues of cyberbullying and digital harassment. By calling on law enforcement, the Coalition of Justice Advocates is seeking not only protection for its members but also to instigate a larger conversation about the responsibilities of social media users and the potential legal ramifications of their actions. This case may set a precedent for how authorities address similar cases involving public figures in Nigeria and the role that social media plays in shaping public discourse.
