Corruption in the UOM: The Scandal Grows That Involves Furlán Days Before the Election in Which He Seeks Reelection

The current secretary general of the Union of Metalworkers (UOM), Abel Furlán, is under investigation for possible embezzlement of union funds as he campaigns for reelection amid serious corruption allegations.

The Union of Metalworkers (UOM), a significant labor union linked to Peronism, is currently preparing for elections to choose its general secretary for the next four years, amidst serious and unique corruption scandals. The current secretary general, Abel Furlán, is seeking reelection while facing legal accusations of embezzling millions from the union funds that members contribute at 2% of their salaries. Just days before the election, police raided the union's headquarters, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against Furlán.

Reports from Clarín and A24 have unveiled that Furlán signed a secret agreement with a little-known company, USEM SA, without consulting the heads of the UOM's 500 regional branches. This agreement supposedly allows USEM SA to control the substantial flow of union funds in exchange for a 0.5% commission. The company, whose shareholder is Soledad Calle, a member of the La Cámpora political movement and also an employee of the UOM, has reportedly generated profits exceeding one hundred million from this arrangement.

The implications of this scandal extend beyond just individual accountability; they could significantly affect the union's leadership landscape and the broader political context within which Peronism operates in Argentina. With the elections approaching, the growing discontent among union members and the legal scrutiny surrounding Furlán may influence voter sentiment and the outcomes of the elections, potentially prompting calls for reform and greater transparency in the management of union resources.
