Trump: NATO's future will be bleak without cooperation on Hormuz…possible postponement of US-China summit
President Trump warned that NATO’s future could be severely compromised if countries do not cooperate on security in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting pressure on China and other nations to participate in defense mechanisms.
President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning regarding the future of NATO, emphasizing that if countries fail to cooperate in ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz, the alliance's future could face severe challenges. In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump urged European and Asian nations to engage in US military operations, pointing out the significant dependency of Europe and China on oil resources passing through this crucial maritime passage. He believes it is logical for countries benefitting from the Strait to assist in preventing instability there, reflecting a clear message of pressure directed at key oil-importing nations.
Trump’s comments come as he publicly called for collaboration from Asian countries including China, Japan, and South Korea, as well as from European allies such as the UK and France, stressing that about one-fifth of the world's oil transits through the Strait of Hormuz. He has stated that their cooperation is essential for energy security, underscoring a message that failure to respond positively to US requests could result in dire consequences for NATO's standing. He is notably pessimistic about the likelihood of these countries complying with his requests, which indicates a potential rift in international cooperation regarding critical energy routes.
Additionally, Trump hinted at the possibility of postponing his upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, should China not cooperate in alleviating the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz before their meeting. This comes amid ongoing discussions between US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Hu Haifeng about the summit scheduled for later this month in Beijing. Trump’s remarks may signal a firmer stance against nations that do not align with US priorities, particularly emphasizing the need for collective action in securing oil supply chains that are vital for global energy sectors.
