2 dead after 4 rescued from Ottawa high-rise apartment unit on fire: officials

Two people died following a fire in an Ottawa high-rise apartment where four others were rescued.

On a Saturday evening, multiple emergency calls prompted Ottawa Fire Services to respond to a fire in a high-rise apartment building located on Somerset Street West. The first call, received around 9:36 p.m., indicated active fire alarms, and subsequent calls highlighted residents trapped inside the unit. The situation escalated with one caller reporting being stranded on the balcony due to severe heat and smoke, making escape impossible through the inside of the apartment.

Firefighters arrived within three minutes to find significant smoke billowing from the building's rooftop. They worked diligently to rescue four individuals from the fire-stricken apartment. Despite these efforts, reports later confirmed that two of the rescued individuals succumbed to their injuries, underscoring the tragic outcomes of the emergency situation. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and how it progressed so rapidly.

The incident raises concerns regarding fire safety in high-rise buildings, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Ottawa. Emergency services are likely to review response strategies and safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Community responses have already begun to emerge, with calls for enhanced fire safety protocols that protect residents in multi-unit dwellings.
