New directive from the EU: Ukraine can enter now

The European Parliament voted in favor of a new EU expansion strategy that allows Ukraine to integrate into EU structures before full membership.

On March 11, the European Parliament voted to support a new expansion strategy for the European Union (EU). This decision directly impacts Ukraine's membership prospects, endorsing a model where Ukraine could start participating in EU structures before achieving full membership. The outcome of the vote does not immediately result in new members joining the EU but sets the framework for how and when the EU can expand and indicates the need for reforms in the EU's decision-making processes ahead of accepting new member states.

According to MEP Ville Niinistö, the new directive proposes a phased integration approach for Ukraine, suggesting that the country could become part of certain EU structures even while its full membership could still be years away. Niinistö emphasized that this phase-wise integration would reward countries for their progress, allowing them to engage with some aspects of EU structures during the membership process. This could include participation in internal markets, scientific cooperation, and financial mechanisms.

This development reflects the EU's increasing support for Ukraine amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and suggests that the EU aims to strengthen ties with Ukraine, potentially to enhance security and stability in the region. The phased integration model may also serve to encourage other nations pursuing EU membership, emphasizing a commitment to gradual inclusion rather than an abrupt membership process.
