Popular Clothing Store Sought for Bankruptcy
Kusa Oy, the Finnish parent company of the popular clothing store Beyond Retro, has filed for bankruptcy, citing tough competition in the used clothing sector.
Kusa Oy, the Finnish parent company of the well-known clothing retailer Beyond Retro, has filed for bankruptcy as noted in the Finnish insolvency register. The bankruptcy application reached the Helsinki District Court on March 12, 2026. The company operates two locations in Finland, located in Helsinki and Turku, while also maintaining several successful stores in Sweden and the UK. This indicates the brand's international reach despite struggles within the Finnish market.
Mark Ellis, who has been identified as the director of Kusa Oy on its website, clarified that he has not managed the company for the past year but remains in charge of business operations in the Nordic region. His cautious comments reflect a challenging landscape for used clothing retailers, emphasizing that sales in Finland have been particularly poor. He mentioned that significant competition, especially from Uff, a major player in the Finnish second-hand clothing market, has placed additional pressure on their profitability.
Ellis noted that at the beginning of their operations in Finland, the stores performed well. However, he highlighted a growing consumer reluctance to justify high prices for used clothing, possibly affecting the sales figures. This situation points to broader challenges within the second-hand market and raises concerns about consumer perceptions related to value and pricing in the context of sustainability and economic pressures.
