Political Scientist: SD Could Take Important Ministerial Posts

Political discussions in Sweden indicate that the Sweden Democrats (SD) may be positioned to take significant ministerial roles following the Liberal Party's decision to ease restrictions on collaboration with SD.

Political developments in Sweden are shifting as the Liberal Party has decided to relax its red lines against collaborating with the Sweden Democrats (SD). This move was marked by a meeting between party leaders Simona Mohamsson and Jimmie Åkesson, who celebrated the decision with an embrace. The Liberals are now set to hold an extraordinary national meeting to vote on the leadership's decision, where a majority in favor could lead to a collaboration that would substantially alter the political landscape. If successful, this would allow the Liberals to lead the charge in integrating SD into the government.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's concerns over allowing SD into the government seem to be diminishing, especially given the current political climate where the Liberal Party appears likely to struggle to meet the threshold for parliamentary representation. With the Tidö parties potentially accumulating enough support to surpass the opposition, there is an emerging consensus that forming a government involving SD is feasible. Political scientist Erik Wångmar from Linnaeus University suggests that this trajectory may lead to SD becoming the largest party and, consequently, setting the stage to demand significant ministerial posts.

If the hypothetical situation comes to fruition, with an expected 24 ministers in the cabinet, Wångmar speculates that SD could be allocated around ten ministerial positions. This scenario highlights the changing dynamics within Swedish politics, where the SD’s influence could reshape policy directions and government priorities, marking a significant moment in Sweden’s recent political history.
