The Iran Crisis Causes Chaos in Bangladesh! India Will Send 45,000 Tons of Diesel
Bangladesh is set to import an additional 45,000 tons of diesel from India by April due to the ongoing crisis in Iran.
Bangladesh is facing a fuel supply crisis, primarily due to the geopolitical tensions arising from the Iran crisis. In response, India will export an additional 45,000 tons of diesel to support Bangladesh’s fuel needs. The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation's General Manager, Mohammad Murshid Hossain Azad, confirmed this news, stating that 5,000 tons of diesel have already been received, with another shipment expected around March 18 or 19. This initiative reflects India's commitment to aiding its neighbor amidst challenges.
This export of diesel is not a new development; previously, diesel was imported into Bangladesh through train wagons. The situation, however, changed after the inauguration of the Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline in March 2023, a collaborative effort led by the Prime Ministers of both countries, Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi. This pipeline allows for a more efficient transfer of fuel, enabling Bangladesh to handle its energy needs better during periods of shortage, as currently experienced due to the crisis in Iran.
The additional proposal to import another 40,000 tons of diesel highlights the ongoing cooperation between India and Bangladesh, as it demonstrates India's readiness to fulfill the fuel supply demands of its neighbor. Nonetheless, this requirement underscores Bangladesh's vulnerability to external crises and its dependency on Indian imports for energy security, raising questions about the long-term sustainability of such arrangements.
