Deterioration in evaluation and fractured support become challenges for Lula in the Northeast
President Lula faces significant challenges in the Northeast of Brazil as his government evaluation declines and support fractures across multiple states.
The Northeast region, crucial for Lula's victory in the 2022 elections, now presents a more challenging landscape for his re-election campaign. Recent surveys indicate a slight decline in government approval and an increase in rejection among voters in this region, with splits within the coalition in at least six of the nine states. This region was the only one in Brazil where Lula achieved a commanding victory four years ago, overshadowing losses elsewhere and securing his third term in office.
Despite retaining the majority support of Northeastern voters after three years in office, Lula's positive ratings have diminished. Data from a Datafolha poll shows that the portion of voters who outright refuse to vote for him has risen from 27% in March 2022 to 33% in recent assessments. This change is concerning for Lula's allies, who stress that a strong performance in the Northeast is essential for his re-election hopes, given the scale of his previous victories in the region.
The political landscape in the Northeast is further complicated by fractures within Lula's base of support, which could threaten his ability to mobilize voters effectively. As he enters the election season, the president must reconcile these challenges and reinforce his connections within the region to replicate the overwhelming support he garnered in the last election, which he needs to overcome opposition from both traditional rivals and shifts in voter sentiment.
