US-Israel-Iran war: NLC demands tax relief, cost of living allowance
The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged the Federal Government to implement tax relief and allowances to mitigate the impact of rising petrol prices amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised alarm over the recent surge in petrol prices in Nigeria which has reached between N1,170 and N1,300 per litre. They are calling for immediate government intervention to alleviate the financial burden on workers and citizens. With petrol prices spiking, the NLC argues that economic hardship has worsened considerably, risking severe social unrest if necessary measures are not implemented swiftly.
In their statement, the NLC highlighted the adverse effects that global volatility in oil prices, especially due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, has had on Nigeria's economy. They criticized the government's failure to protect citizens from these fluctuations and pointed out the precarious state of Nigeria's downstream petroleum sector, which has become evident through the current crisis. The Congress emphasizes that these developments have deepened the suffering of everyday Nigerians, particularly workers and their families, who are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.
The urgent demands from the NLC include calls for a cost-of-living allowance and wage awards for workers, alongside tax relief initiatives. In their statement titled “Save Nigerians From This Shock: An Urgent Relief Has Become Necessary,” NLC President Joe Ajaero underscores the necessity of these measures to safeguard the welfare of the population amidst increasing economic challenges. Without prompt action, the NLC warns of potential unrest fueled by the growing dissatisfaction among citizens facing economic adversity.
