Vingegaard wins Paris-Nice as the first Dane

Jonas Vingegaard has made history by winning the Paris-Nice cycling race, becoming the first Dane to claim victory in this prestigious event.

Jonas Vingegaard of team Visma has achieved a historic milestone in cycling by winning this year's Paris-Nice, thereby becoming the first Danish cyclist to take the crown in the event's history. On Sunday, Vingegaard secured his victory on the final eighth stage, having previously dominated the race with an impressive lead. This accomplishment is particularly significant as it comes on his third attempt at Paris-Nice, where he had faced disappointment in the previous two editions of the race, finishing runner-up both times.

Entering the last stage in the yellow leader's jersey and with a substantial gap over his competitors, Vingegaard focused on finishing the race strong. However, despite his efforts to secure another stage win, he narrowly lost the sprint to Lenny Martinez of Bahrain, missing out on what could have been his hat trick of stage victories. Nevertheless, his overall lead of 4 minutes and 23 seconds over Daniel Felipe Martinez, who suffered a crash during the final stage, solidified his remarkable achievement.

The final stage comprised 129 hilly kilometers around Nice, which served as both the starting and finishing point. Vingegaard's performance not only earned him the overall title but also showcased his resilience and skill in the race, following his earlier triumphs in other cycling circuits. As he stands now as the trailblazer for Danish cycling at Paris-Nice, Vingegaard’s success is expected to inspire future generations of cyclists from Denmark to aspire for similar achievements in international competitions.
