Drama in Biathlon - Kaisa Mäkäräinen Stunned on Yle
Finnish biathletes finished 14th in the mixed relay at the World Cup in Otepää, Estonia.
On Sunday afternoon, Finnish biathletes competed in the mixed relay held in Otepää, Estonia, during the World Cup. The Finnish team, consisting of Olli Hiidensalo, Arttu Heikkinen, Inka Hämäläinen, and Venla Lehtonen, ultimately finished in 14th place. The race began promisingly for Finland with Hiidensalo delivering a strong performance, achieving a perfect score in the first shooting round and using only two spare rounds in the second. Hiidensalo completed his leg of the race in third place for the team, passing on to Heikkinen.
Heikkinen faced challenges during his segment, incurring penalties in both his prone and standing shooting rounds, resulting in him taking two penalty laps. As a result, the team's position slipped as Hämäläinen took over when Finland was in ninth place. Hämäläinen had a decent shooting performance, hitting his targets but still needing to use two spare rounds. Despite this, he managed to push the team to an interim eighth place before Venla Lehtonen started her leg.
Unfortunately for Lehtonen, she struggled, taking multiple penalty laps that caused Finland to fall out of the top ten. Overall, the Finnish team's mixed relay performance highlighted some individual strengths but ultimately reflected the challenges faced during the competition, particularly in the latter stages which affected their final ranking significantly. The mixed relay in biathlon showcases the importance of both skiing speed and shooting accuracy, and this event will surely lead to insights and adjustments for the Finnish team as they move forward in the World Cup series.
