Green Hackers: Ecuadorian students create an environmental vision app

Green Hackers is an application developed by Ecuadorian school students to promote recycling and waste management while providing economic incentives for eco-friendly actions.

Green Hackers is an innovative application created by two 13-year-old students from Ecuador, Martín Tapia and Andrés Martínez, aimed at promoting environmental responsibility through effective waste management and recycling. The app enables users to identify, classify, measure, and monetize their recycling efforts, thus encouraging environmentally conscious habits. With the motto 'What is not measured is not managed,' the app utilizes blockchain technology to transform everyday actions into actionable data that can earn users digital rewards or economic incentives.

The initiative is supported by their teacher, Pablo Vega, and mentor Ana Parreño, reflecting a collaborative effort within the educational framework that fosters innovation among young students. This project highlights the increasing importance of integrating technology in education, particularly in addressing global environmental issues. The Green Hackers team ranked third at their school’s first student hackathon held in 2025, demonstrating the potential impact of youth-led projects in environmental sustainability.

Felipe Salgado, the technology and innovation coordinator at Eight Academy in Quito, emphasized the significance of such projects in shaping future leaders who are aware of environmental challenges and equipped with the skills to tackle them. Green Hackers is not only a tool for personal environmental accountability but also serves as a model for empowering students to actively engage in sustainability efforts, positioning them as innovations in the field of educational technology and environmental advocacy.
